Apple's new battery charger is deceptively cool
Filed under: HardwareRounding out the list of hardware updates from Apple this morning is a battery charger. Before you dismiss it (as I initially did) as just a battery charger, consider the following. First, Apple is pushing its green aspects. For example, the charger is smart enough to pull less power once the batteries are fully charged. In fact, Apple claims that it has the lowest standby power usage than any similar charger on the market (more on that in a minute). Also, Apple notes that the 6 batteries that ship with it are able to hold a long charge over hundreds of charges. Expect to get 10 years of use out of them, Apple says. The idea is that users will pull less power from the grid and use fewer batteries with Apple's charger. Also consider that this is another step towards Apple's making "the whole widget." For example, you can now buy a computer, mouse, keyboard, Magic Trackpad, batteries and battery charger all from Apple. Who says Steve's a control freak? Finally, let's compare it to a charger I currently own, the Engergizer Rechargeable 15 Minute Charger. When I say "own," I mean "despise." Yes, it charges batteries in 15 minutes, and they'll hold that charge for almost as long! It's also huge (it uses one socket and covers the other) and heats up like an iron forge. For $32 it ships with 4 batteries, compared to the 6 Apple gives you for $29. Yes, it's a battery charger. But it's also been infused with Apple magic. Apple releases new 27-inch LED Cinema Display
Filed under: HardwareAt long last, Apple has updated the Cinema Display line with a new 27-inch LED model that will ship later this year. With its 2560 x 1440 resolution, your pixels will enjoy 60% more elbow room than on the 24-inch LED model. In addition to the extra real estate, this model offers an iSight camera, mic and speakers, plus a powered USB 2.0 hub (3 ports) and MagSafe connector to charge your laptop. The display includes ambient light sensor, which adjusts the display's brightness in response to the light in a room. Apple's also keen to describe the display's environmental friendliness, noting that it uses mercury-free LED technology, arsenic-free glass and recyclable materials. Additionally, the display meets Energy Star 5.0 requirements and achieves EPEAT Gold status. It sure sounds nice, and it will be available in September for US$999. Note that it requires a Mac with a Mini DisplayPort.TUAWApple releases new 27-inch LED Cinema Display originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 27 Jul 2010 09:45:00 EST. Apple introduces the Magic Trackpad
Filed under: HardwareToday, Apple released the Magic Trackpad, calling it "...a multi-touch Bluetooth trackpad meant to work with your desktop computer." It certainly resembles an oversized MacBook Pro trackpad (in fact, it's 80% larger) perched atop the same battery case that's on Apple's Bluetooth keyboards. In fact, it sits at the same height and angle as the keyboard, so you can move back and forth easily. tweetmeme_url = 'http://www.tuaw.com/2010/07/27/apple-introduces-the-magic-trackpad/'; tweetmeme_source = 'tuaw'; When paired with an Apple desktop, it offers the same multi-touch gestures that laptop owners enjoy. Use it to swipe, pinch and scroll. Inertial scrolling on the Magic Trackpad reacts to the pressure and speed you use. The surface is made of wear-resistant glass and, get this: the entire thing is also a giant button, so click away as you would with a mouse. We first saw a trademark filing for the name back in February and FCC approval in July. Back in June, a leaked photo of what we were then calling the "Magic Slate" appeared, and many wondered if it would be revealed at WWDC '10. The Magic Trackpad is available now for US$69.TUAWApple introduces the Magic Trackpad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 27 Jul 2010 09:10:00 EST. Found Footage: Beautiful Apple design
Filed under: Found Footage In the tradition of the "30 years of Apple in 2 minutes" video we recently featured, here's a well-photographed, albeit incomplete, look at some of Apple's best designs. It starts off with the "beige angles" of the Apple II, Lisa and Macintosh before progressing to the "dark portables" (Apple QuickTake and PowerCD) and "translucent colors" (eMate and G3 iMac). It ends with "glass and aluminum," showing off the current-generation iMac, iPhone 4 and iPad. It's well shot and that ethereal music makes me feel like Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are going to pop up at any moment. Well done, Matt's Macintosh! You obviously love your machines, and we can't blame you.TUAWFound Footage: Beautiful Apple design originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 21:00:00 EST. Rumor: TiVo stock climbs on talk of deal with Apple for new Apple TV
Filed under: Rumors, Apple TVA small post in Barron's noted today that TiVo shares have jumped up about 5% today on rumors that the company's DVR technology may be included in the next iteration of the Apple TV. TiVo's Premiere device has greater functionality than the Apple TV, with the ability to record up to 150 hours of HD video (with the Premiere XL), on-demand video streaming from Netflix, Amazon Video, and YouTube, viewing of photo libraries on TV, and a choice of music and photo streaming services. There has been a lot of speculation as of late that Apple may be poised to make the Apple TV more than just a hobby. With Google TV just around the corner and Google making deals with Sony, Logitech, Intel, and the Dish Network, Apple may be looking for partners to help jump-start a revival in the neglected Apple TV. Is Apple too slow on delivering bumpers and cases?
Filed under: iPhoneGee whiz. It took Apple a while to respond to all the "death grip" stories, but Steve Jobs certainly got his point out in an unprecedented news conference July 16th and in a letter to customers July 2. Now that the Bumper/Free case program is under way, delivery is said to be 3 to 5 weeks. Hey Apple, what's your hurry? Unfortunately we live in a world of instant gratification. See an app you want? Download it instantly. Want to see a video? It's a click or two away. While most people aren't having reception problems with their iPhones, those that have been complaining will find a delay of up to 5 weeks a bit much. That will put delivery for some into September. That's a lot of dropped calls and a lot of dodgy data reception. It's about the delivery speed of those crummy TV offers from the now deceased Billy Mays. There's no denying that Apple has done a good thing by offering cases, and using an app to register was an awfully clever idea. There may be supply problems, but my local Best Buy and AT&T stores seem to have plenty of iPhone 4 cases now. Do you think Apple should have stepped up the pace a bit? Apple posts Droid X antenna issue video

The Droid X, which runs Google's Android OS, is seen as the greatest rival to Apple's wildly popular iPhone 4, so it's no surprise that Apple has gotten around to showcasing that the Droid X, like most smartphones, suffers from attenuation issues. Apple warning retailers of short-term iMac shortages -- new models in the pipeline?
Filed under: iMac Several sources are reporting that Apple is notifying direct and indirect sales channels of upcoming shortages of stock for the iMac. It appears that Apple is drawing down inventory in anticipation of the introduction of new models of the popular desktop machines. According to AppleInsider, a source says that Apple is informing some distributors not to expect future shipments of the 21.5" 3.06 GHz iMac, indicating that the model may no longer be in production. It's widely expected that a new iMac lineup would include a dual-core Intel Core i5 model in addition to the existing quad-core i5 and i7 configurations. It's not known if the new iMacs will include USB 3.0 support. The new specification has been out for more than a year, and many Mac fans are looking forward to seeing support for the standard. USB 3.0 provides transfer speeds up to ten times what the existing USB 2.0 spec can handle, and is more power efficient. Still missing in action is a new Mac Pro, which hasn't seen an update in quite some time. Some rumors have stated that Apple is working on a 12-core Intel Xeon-based Mac Pro for release later this year. The look of free: iPhone 4 cases offered by Apple
Filed under: iPhoneAs noted earlier this morning, Apple's Bumper refund & free case program is underway for the iPhone 4. It's worth noting that although you can get yourself a free Snap Case, Shield Micra, Motif, Reveal Etch, Fitted or PixelSkin HD case from Apple, the company will not be refunding previous purchases of any third-party cases; you can only get your money back on a Bumper. Apple tops media impact rankings in Q2
Filed under: AppleWhile we tend to hold Apple's feet to the fire on issues with their otherwise stellar products, the world at large sees a glossy coat of scratch-resistant awesome all over the Cupertino brand. According to General Sentiment (a media measurement firm somewhat obviously named), Apple was not only discussed more than any other brand in Q2 of this year, they are spoken of in high regard. You see, General Sentiment has developed a new metric called Perception Value and to show off the difference between "Impact" or how much a brand was discussed online, and "Perception" or how well-regarded a company is in those online conversations, they've focused on the Perception Value of Apple in their 12-page report on Brand Exposure Analysis. Unsurprisingly, BP made it to #2 in terms of impact, as the spill in the gulf was widely discussed on Facebook, Twitter and blogs. In terms of perception, BP isn't sitting so pretty. Apple, on the other hand, ranks #1 because of successful iPad and iPhone 4 launches. New Apple VP to address product quality
Filed under: Apple CorporateIf you thought Apple wasn't serious about quality you haven't been paying much attention for the past decade. In addition to making better hardware every year (with the exception of iBook keyboards), Apple has now promoted Jeff Williams to Senior VP of Operations; he'll be working alongside Tim Cook (Apple's COO, possibly the successor-designate to Steve Jobs) to ensure the company's products are of the highest quality. Williams will also keep an eye on the supply chain management side, a critical element in keeping costs low while pushing quality into the stratosphere. As AppleInsider reports, Williams cut his teeth at IBM before moving to Apple, and his expertise in supply chain management shone as he helped get the pieces for the iPod back when it was largely "off the shelf" components -- the shelves being mostly located in China. Williams was instrumental in global rollouts of the iPod and, more recently, the launch of the iPhone. Apple posts video showing antenna issue on Nokia N97 mini
Filed under: Apple, iPhone Apple hasn't traditionally been a company that calls out its competition by name, but that's not the case with this Antennagate campaign -- it's posted a video and added information to its page calling out the Nokia N97 mini for suffering from the same issues the iPhone 4 is getting complaints about. In the video above, you can clearly see that yes, holding the Nokia phone by its antenna will cause the signal bars to drop. Honestly, though, I'm not really sure what Apple is trying to say with this page and these phone comparisons. Yes, Apple, you win -- your phone is just as bad as everyone else's? Don't get me wrong -- I haven't picked up an iPhone 4 yet, but only because I haven't been able to find one. The reception issues don't really bother me. Still, I think it's the wrong tack for Apple to take just putting their phone alongside everyone else's and saying this is an industry-wide issue. I bought my original iPhone (and will buy the iPhone 4) because it's better than everyone else's, and it's weird to see Apple apparently trying to convince me otherwise. Apple donates MacPaint source to museum
Filed under: AppleMacPaint was one of the first big "wows" of the graphical UI. Before the early days of Mac OS, operating systems were strictly text affairs, and creating graphics was done mostly by writing code. But MacPaint helped to change all of that, putting image creation in a graphical user interface (creating standby design ideas like the "marching ants" selection indicator), and allowing those images to be used in other programs and applications. Now, Apple has donated the MacPaint source code to the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. Andy Hertzfeld (who writes about the MacPaint code here) is perhaps the one most responsible for the donation -- he hunted down some original floppy disk copies of the app, and then installed it on a networked Lisa computer to obtain the source code, and then came upon the idea of getting it donated to a museum so everyone could see it. After poking around Apple for a few years, he finally talked to Steve Jobs in January of this year, and Jobs fast-tracked the approval process so the donation could happen today. Very cool story, and it's excellent to see a little piece of Apple (and computer) history enshrined in a museum. You can get both the MacPaint and QuickDraw source code right off of the museum's website. Apple details location information sharing
Filed under: Apple, iPhoneApple had to do some explaining recently -- after a House of Representatives probe into the company's privacy policy came up, the company sent a twelve-page letter to the members of Congress, going into detail on what all of the legalese in the company's privacy policy actually means. The biggest takeaway is that Apple does collect location data from your iPhone -- every 24 hours, an encrypted batch of locations for cell towers, Wi-Fi access points, and GPS coordinates are hooked up to a zip code and sent back to Apple. This is all true -- we've heard from customers who've noticed the daily batch of information sent out over their iPhone's data plan. Why does Apple do all of this? The company claims that it's all necessary to account for "the ever-changing physical landscape, more innovative uses of mobile technology, and the increasing number of Apple's customers." Of course, if you don't want to be a part of this system, you can shut all of the location tracking down right inside the phone's preferences -- either phone-wide, or on a per-app basis depending on what version of iOS you are using. Version 3 and below requires a visit to each app, iOS 4 allows you to shut it off at the OS level. Just go to Settings>General>Location Services and turn location data on or off. The problem then, of course, is that you won't have access to those services while you use your phone. Apple also notes that it collects the same data from Macs who use location-based services (like automatically setting your time zone), and the iAd network also sends location information every time an ad is requested. In short, Apple knows where you are, and in return, you get the benefit of location-specific information. Apple is expected to report earnings of $3.11 per share on sales of $14.75 billion for Q3 2010. That's what's expected, but Apple has typically had a history of blowing past analyst expectations. The history of Apple and AT&T's marriage of convenience
Filed under: iPhoneWired has just published a lengthy article that outlines the often uncomfortable partnership between Apple and AT&T. The overall thread of the article isn't anything new. Apple isn't happy with AT&T's flimsy network infrastructure; meanwhile, AT&T, though certainly happy with the increased profits it's gained thanks to the iPhone, feels as though Apple hasn't held up its end of the whole "partnership" angle, since Apple is insisting that AT&T solve its network problems on its own. What's most interesting and entertaining about the article are some of the anecdotes. Within a few months of the iPhone's introduction in 2007, AT&T, finding itself pummelled by unprecedented demands on its network, met with Apple and tried to get the company to put some data-sipping restrictions on the device. AT&T wanted YouTube to run only over Wi-Fi, run at lower resolution, or restrict videos to a minute of playback. Apple flat-out refused. "No, we are not going to mess up the consumer experience on the iPhone to make your network tenable," said an Apple employee (according to Wired). When AT&T threatened to escalate the matter to its executives, Apple staffers said, "Fine, we'll escalate it to Steve and see who wins." Apparently, an AT&T rep once suggested that Steve Jobs wear a business suit to a meeting with AT&T's board of directors. The response? "We're Apple. We don't wear suits. We don't even own suits." At the same time, Steve Jobs considered severing ties with AT&T only a few months after the iPhone's launch. Only two things kept Apple from dropping AT&T in 2007: the iPhone would have needed to be redesigned completely in order to function on Verizon's CDMA network, and it was also unlikely that Verizon would handle the additional data load any better than AT&T had. As an international iPhone user, my own experience with AT&T has been mercifully brief and limited to them telling me that they wouldn't allow me to get a prepaid SIM so that I could use my New Zealand iPhone in the US for two weeks. After reading the Wired piece (which is an intriguing read and highly recommended), I still can't say that I'm sympathetic toward AT&T. I will say that it seems like any US carrier who tied itself to the iPhone in 2007 would likely have found itself in the same state as AT&T. AT&T's profits are up, but its reputation is circling the drain, ... and its image is unlikely to recover anytime soon.TUAWThe history of Apple and AT&T's marriage of convenience originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 20 Jul 2010 11:00:00 EST. Apple releases iBooks 1.1.1
Filed under: iTSFollowing on the heels of the iTunes 9.2.1 update that was released yesterday, Apple has updated the iBooks app to version 1.1.1, which includes "substantial performance improvements when reading PDFs." While the new version of iBooks still lacks some lovin' for PDFs that e-books get (in-text Dictionary lookup, notes, etc.), this version makes swiping through PDFs smoother than before. Other improvements to iBooks 1.1.1 include: o. The ability to double-tap an image within a book in order to view it in greater detail. o. The ability to experience books that include audio and video. o. Look up definitions to English words inside books without a specified language. o. An answer to an issue that may have caused some book downloads to not complete. o. The addition of many stability and performance improvements. The free update for both the iPad and iPhone/iPod touch apps is available now in the App Store.TUAWApple releases iBooks 1.1.1 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 20 Jul 2010 09:30:00 EST. Crisis expert says Apple gets a C on iPhone 4 PR
Filed under: Apple, iPhoneHilarious Taiwanese videos aside, just how did Apple do with last week's touchy press conference? Patrick Kerley, a communications strategist for a firm in Washington, DC, tells Computerworld that Apple actually did very well -- only it might have been too late already. He said that Jobs was very on message at last week's press conference, and that walking on stage and telling everyone that all phones have reception issues was actually a brilliant move. Seth Weintraub of Fortune agrees -- while he doesn't think that Apple and other cellphone makers actually share the same problems, he does say that Jobs' reframing of the reception issue was so effective that other cellphone companies actually sent out their own press releases on Friday, responding to Apple and becoming part of the issue. On the other hand, Kerley says that while the press conference did its job, Apple should have stepped up sooner with a statement about the iPhone 4's reception -- just staying back from the issue allowed others like Consumer Reports to step up and fill the informational void. While there was a risk of responding too soon and making a problem even bigger than it should be, Kerley believes Apple gets a C on the issue overall, and that it should have come out with a "We're working on it" statement way before it did. Of course, this is all PR analysis about spin -- the best case scenario is that there shouldn't have been a problem in the first place. Hopefully, with the refunds available and the free bumpers shipping, everyone's iPhones will receive and send calls freely, and we can all get back to our favorite pastime: waiting for the next version to be announced.TUAWCrisis expert says Apple gets a C on iPhone 4 PR originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 19 Jul 2010 17:30:00 EST. Rumor: Apple to launch 4k video format?
Filed under: Apple TVHardMac is reporting that they've been told by one of their sources that Apple is gearing up to launch a new video format. Apple's supposed new format would be based on the Dirac codec which was developed by BBC Research. The codec is open source and currently supports 1920x1080 resolutions, but Apple plans to up the format to support 4k video - that's a resolution of up to 4096x2160. HardMac points out that many people still do not have 1080p HDTVs at home, much less TVs capable of supporting 4k resolution, but they theorize that Apple would be planning to enter the HDTV market from the high end - at the same time introducing not only stunning hardware, but making Blu-ray discs look archaic with their "low" resolution. Apple has always maintained the Apple TV is a "hobby" and indeed, they haven't done much to promote the device since its launch in 2007. Still many prominent analysts believe that it's not a matter of "if" but "when" Apple will enter the the home television market full-force. The logical step, it would seem, would be to merge the Apple TV digital receiver into a large LED display and offer an iPod touch-like remote control and Bluetooth keyboard support. Throw in a built-in camera with FaceTime and the world of The Jetsons is one step closer to reality.TUAWRumor: Apple to launch 4k video format? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 19 Jul 2010 16:30:00 EST. Apple's Magic Trackpad approved by FCC
Filed under: Bluetooth, Apple We've seen the Magic Trackpad name before, and we've even gotten a glimpse of what the device might be -- a larger, Bluetooth-enabled multitouch surface designed to bring all of the gestural and multitouch capability found on the iDevices and MacBooks to the desktop itself. Now, Engadget notes that it appears the FCC has approved testing of such a device for Apple -- a "Bluetooth trackpad" that's reportedly set for production. The testing was actually done in October of last year, but FCC filings have risen into public view, which means that Apple could finally unveil the device as soon as later this week. Not much is known about the actual device (with the model number A1339), but presumably it would be used as a larger touch surface for Bluetooth-enabled computers. Does that mean Apps on the Mac, or, at the very least, actual multitouch testing for iPhone development? We'll have to wait and see.TUAWApple's Magic Trackpad approved by FCC originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 19 Jul 2010 15:30:00 EST. Wall Street awaits Apple's Q3 earnings
Filed under: Apple FinancialAfter a stellar second quarter, Wall Street is now scrambling to figure out what the effect of Steve Jobs' announcement on Friday regarding "Antennagate" will have on the company's stock, as Apple prepares to deliver the company's Q3 earnings on Tuesday. As reported by Fortune, analysts must consider whether or not to take into account the negative publicity surrounding the iPhone 4, or focus on unit sales and gross margins. Analysts also must look at the iPad's continued spread into other countries; that despite the issues, more than 3 million iPhone 4s have been sold to date -- and we can't forget our good friend, the Mac. TUAW will host a liveblog tomorrow starting at 5 pm ET as Apple begins its conference call to report earnings for the quarter.TUAWWall Street awaits Apple's Q3 earnings originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 19 Jul 2010 14:30:00 EST. Filed under: iPhoneSome rumors from last May that Apple was paying a part of the salary of workers in the Foxconn assembly plant have been denied by the giant Taiwan electronics company. We've previously reported that Foxconn has started to give substantial pay raises to employees after a spate of publicity about suicides at the Foxconn plant. the company also says it is going to move some of the Apple product production to new facilities in other parts of China.
